We have purchased another Vending Machine Energy Miser to reduce vending machine energy use even further. We have also purchased the Kill A Watt EZ usage Monitor and a KINTREX Non-contact infrared Thermometer with Laser Targeting to start to get a better handle on our energy consumption weakness within our classrooms and the school building. The Building and Grounds supervisor, Jim Christofferson, has requested our assistance in taking regular Q-Trak Indoor Air Quality Monitor readings, so that he could use the data to fine tune the heating and ventilation system for particular areas of the school.
We will help reduce our school’s energy consumption and thus save the school valuable money, which could be used for other things, such as student programs and technology needs.
We are currently recycling plastic bottles and aluminum in the cafeteria. However, this coming year, we will extend this recycling to the classrooms and athletic events as many students and public are still throwing their plastic bottles away. We have used grant money to purchase more recycling containers to place strategically throughout the school building in order to further encourage recycling of waste material.
Until we get a better idea of how to go about composting food waste with worm farming, we would like to figure out a way to recycle milk cartons and/or reduce the waste in the first place.
This project would start immediately and be ongoing. We would like to encourage more students and staff to carpool, walk and/or take the school bus, rather than driving on their own through a program of education and incentives. We live in a very rural district, so all of the driving has a major impact on our carbon footprint. We are budgeting $50 for copying or other small recognition awards. We would hope to team up with the communities Green committee to see if we could get some local businesses to donate small incentives for less carbon combustion in commuting to school.
