St Paul Council President, Kathy Lantry, spoke with Harding’s Earth Club on March 13, 2009. Over 30 Earth Club members listened to her speak about the importance of volunteering in their community. She told students their ideas, ambitions and what they value do matter and their actions will make a difference. Age is not important when it comes to being involved. Council members do listen to the wishes of youth. When asked if there were different issues facing St Paul now than when she grew up in St Paul she replied the issues are not very different than when she grew up in St Paul…only the faces have changed. People are still concerned about city services, employment, housing and raising their families in a safe city with good opportunities.
Xong Vang, a community orgainizer at Arlington Library, spoke about her Teen Group. She said it only takes a few individuals to make a large difference. Her small teen group meets regularily and develops programs for the community. They have planted gardens and held carnivals for their neighborhood. Xong encouraged everyone to be involved in their community. Choose which areas are important to you and do something to improve the community. Get out and volunteer.
Thank you to Kathy Lantry and Xong Vang for visiting and sharing their experiences with Earth Club.
