Energy and Sustainablity Events at UMD! April 2009

Whether you are a student, staff, or faculty- there are many ways to get involved in sustainability-related activities at UMD. Whether you want to learn, lend a hand, contribute to goal-setting, take a hike, watch a movie, or find a green job…there is something for everyone!

  • The first annual State of Sustainability update at UMD will be held from noon-1pm on April 15 in the Library Rotunda. Refreshments will be served at 11:30 am. For more info, visit www.d.umn.edu/sustain.
  • The Better Neighbors Annual City Cleanup will start at 1 pm on April 18 in Portland Square (15th Avenue & 4th Street E). Volunteers will pick up garbage in neighborhoods surrounding campus. At 3:30 pm, free pizza, pop and prizes will be the reward. Contact Thomas DeMinco at demi0042@d.umn.edu to sign up.
  • A Sustainability Fair with info on energy research, teaching, conservation, and campus sustainability will be held from 11 am – 4 pm on April 21 in the Kirby Student Center. The theme for the Fair is Energy, Campus, and Community. At 4 pm, an outdoor demonstration of Hartley Nature Center’s Energy cart will take place near the Kirby bus hub.   • UMD Rec Sports Outdoor Program and Late Night Kirby will host a late night hike in Bagley Nature Area on April 21. Meet in Kirby Lounge at 9 pm.
  • Earth Day is April 22 and the Student Sustainability Coalition is hosting Eco-Movies all day long in the from 10 am – 4 pm in the KSC Lounge.
  • The first ever Bike to Class Fest takes place from 11 am – 3 pm on April 23 outside near the Kirby bus hub. Get information on local trails, register for prizes, and find out more about biking in Duluth. This event is sponsored by the Student Sustainability Coalition and the UMD Cycling Club.   • The Respect Your Mother Earth and 4th Annual Outdoor Art Show will be held from noon – 9 pm on April 25 in Leif Erickson Park.
  • Housing and Residence Life hosts ‘Sweep the Halls- 2009’ at 1 pm on April 26. Meet on Griggs Beach by the BBQ pits. Refreshments be provided after the clean-up.
  • “Sustainability and U: Viewpoints from UMD,” the culmination of April sustainability events, will be held at 10:30 am on April 29 in Weber Music Hall. Join UMD Chancellor Kathryn A. Martin and U of MN Vice President Kathleen O’Brien.
