On November 18th, student volunteers helped to screw in 50,000 energy saving L.E.D. light bulbs. The bulbs were replacing permanent festive lighting for UMD’s Ordean Court. The new energy saving LED light bulbs arrived separate from the strings, and students were cajoled into helping put them together with refreshments (and the fact they would be helping reduce our carbon footprint!)
What’s the deal with LED lights? Why are they more sustainable?
• Energy-efficient – 0.2 watts per LED bulb (compared with 6.0 watts for a standard incandescent C7 bulb).
• Long life – 100,000 hours or more when used indoors, around 50,000 hours outdoors.
• Safe – no chance of fire, since the bulbs are cool to the touch
