The Integrated Science II Class of 2007-2008 constructed the first butterfly garden in Argyle, and the Integrated Science II Class of 2008-2009 constructed the one in Stephen. Now the Integrated Science II Class of 2009-2010 will be in control of both of them in the spring and summer. The Butterfly Gardens contain a variety of annuals, perennials, butterflies, and other insects. This class also pulled the annuals this past October, and plans to replant the annuals in the spring of 2010!

To educate the elementary students about insects and plants.
This year our Integrated Science II Class started a new program “Click Off-Green Up”. This program encourages and reminds students and teachers to use natural light rather than wasting all the lights in a classroom. As a part of this project we put signs by light switches all over the school.

To conserve energy used in the school.
Here at Stephen-Argyle Central our Integrated Science II class has a recycling program that started in 2007-2008. We Recycle cardboard, office paper, magazines, aluminum cans, pop tabs, plastic bottles, and newspaper. In the year 2009 alone we have accumulated 3,572 pounds of cardboard, 2,123 pounds of office paper, and 918 pounds of magazines. Sense the beginning of the project we have saved an equivalent of 34 trees, 14,000 gallons of water, 924 gallons of oil, and 18 cubic yards of landfill space. From all the office paper we have recycled we have saved 19 trees, 4,000 kilowatts of energy, 7,000 gallons of water, and 380 gallons of oil. Every kilowatt of energy saved is equal to 2.3 pounds of carbon dioxide NOT released into the atmosphere. The 4,000 kilowatts of energy we saved has prevented 9,200 pounds of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere.

To not only save resources but to create an awareness of importance to our students and teachers.
We have recently installed a VendingMiser on a pop machine. We have borrowed KILL A WATT meters from Stephen Utilities to tell us how much energy is being used and how much is being saved when we use the VendingMiser compared to a vending machine without a VendingMiser.

To save energy and compare energy use in a vending machine with and without VendingMiser.
Our Integrated Science ll Class has come up with the idea for students to be green on their way to school. The name of our new project is called the “Carpool Raffle.” For the raffle the student has to walk, bus, bike, or carpool to school or practice; 8 out of the 10 days during a 2 week period. We hold raffles every two weeks. On the Friday of the second week we draw the winner. The winner is able to pick from three prizes: 1. $10 school store gift certificate 2. two weeks in the front of the lunch line or school store line with a friend 3. One free pizza of your choice.

To increase awareness energy conservation by carpooling.
In the school year of 2009-2010 the Integrated Science ll class wanted to find a way to recycle old, broken, or unused cell phones. They found an organization where you donate old cell phones “Cell Phones for Soldiers.” The cell phones that are donated are used to purchase calling cards that are sent to troops in need. This is a good chance for our school to show our support for the Soldiers overseas.

To help those who are helping us overseas.
