The National Campus Energy Challenge allowes students to collect data to see which school could conserve the most energy compared to last year’s energy consumption during the same time-frame. Last year, WSU’s numbers showed a 26 percent reduction in heating and a 6 percent reduction in electricity, combining for an overall energy reduction of 18 percent.
Winona State University tied for second in the first National Campus Energy Challenge held during the month of February in 2008. Swarthmore College of Pennsylvania tied for second place with WSU while St. John’s University of Collegeville, Minn., was determined to be the winner of the competition.
Sponsored by the Minnesota Public Interest Research Group, the challenge focused on comparing current energy consumption data in an effort to increase awareness of resource consumption.
Said Cal Winbush, WSU Sustainability Coordinator, “The students are to be commended for initiating this effort, and the data (confirms) that the University has been effective in its efforts to reduce energy usage.”
WSU Chem 436, Topics in Enviromental Chemistry, promoted the competition. In addition, this year the Environmental Club is sponsoring the annual Bike Week, providing free bike tune-ups and repair; has helped reduced the use of disposable cups on campus; and hosted showings of environmental films.
