Hutchinson High School’s carbon-cutting student task force distributed 216 trees last week. When planted, the trees will gobble up carbon dioxide and spew forth oxygen, helping to reduce the school’s carbon footprint.

Hutchinson High School alum Katharine Plowman, who is coaching the task force, said 200 seedlings were given away and 16 container trees were sold for $15 apiece. Freewill donations also were accepted to support school carbon cutting, with a total of $347 raised.

Plowman said the trees were donated by Hutchinson Utilities. The tree distribution is part of an ongoing campaign, funded by a grant from Minnesota Schools Cutting Carbon.

Upcoming events will include a May 20 high school tree planting and an alternative transportation week May 18-22. Students that week will pledge to carpool, bike or walk to school, for a chance to win prizes.
