In this project, the Springfield High School YES Team worked with all of the Elementary students to calculate their personal carbon footprints. We then found class footprint averages. We hosted a school assembly to discuss carbon, global warming, and carbon footprints with the students. We then met with each grade in small groups to play games and participate in activities that taught them more about the importance of recycling and personal energy conservation. We also experimented with them on model wind turbines and solar panels so that they could learn more about how alternative energies work. Finally, we challenged each class to come up with a simple way that they could reduce carbon emissions in their classrooms or in their homes. The class that wins the Carbon Challenge will get to fly kites and enjoy ice cream with us on Earth Day.
